In a shocking incident, Gertrude Chepkoech, a first year student at Laikipia University died yesterday after being stabbed several times by her roommate’s boyfriend. The man then turned the knife to himself and slit his throat. Here is what Campustica has established;
The victim, Gertrude Chepkoech was stabbed several times inside their hostel room in Karura Village, Nyahururu sub-county where she succumbed to the injuries. The suspect whose name has only been identified as Ezra is an enstraged boyfriend to the victim’s roommate.
Witnesses at the hostel told us that the suspect had frequently visited the girls’ house in the recent past and there had been frequent quarrels then. When neighbors asked they were told that the two were sorting out their issues.
A cleaner who worked at the university (name protected) stated that the suspect was not a student and had been banned by the hostel’s management from accessing the campus the previous week. This was after the alleged girlfriend had alerted the hostel’s management and informed them that the man was forcing himself on her.
However, on Wednesday, the suspect is said to have broken into the ladies’ hostel where his girlfriend had left for exams and instead found her roommate.
According to a friend it seems the two had a secret affair which the girlfriend who had gone for classes did not know.
Neighbors said they heard screams and rushed to the scene only to find Gertrude’s lifeless body lying on the ground. The man had locked the door from inside and on seeing the crowd turned the knife to himself and started slitting his throat.
He also stabbed his stomach but angry students pounced in him mercilessly. He was however rescued by police who rushed him to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital.
A police report indicated that Ms Chepkoech had been stabbed on her chest, back, head and arms before meeting her sudden death. Police are still seeking to establish how the man who traveled from Nakuru was able to infiltrate the campus without being noticed and the cause of the heinous act.
Police believe that Gertrude Chepkoech who was secretly in love with him led him in as that evidence they had sex before she was killed is available.
Police are now trying to establish if he raped her before Killing her or of it was concentual sex.
At the time of reporting, we can confirm that the suspect is in stable condition and the body of the deceased has been moved to the Nyahururu County Referral hospital.
Not the first time!
This is not the first time that a student is killed inside her room. The continued cases of insecurity raise concerns about the safety of students in different universities and colleges.
In the recent past the whole country was shocked when a young MKU female student was stabbed to death several times as her roommates watched.
The suspect had also gained entry into the university’s premises unnoticed where he killed the girl and fled into the dark, see full story here.
